PORTLAND, Maine — The New England Patriots may have left Super Bowl LI with the Lombardi Trophy, but someone else is going home with presidential socks.

Former Republican President George H.W. Bush is giving a pair of socks he wore to the Super Bowl to a Catholic Diocese in Maine so they can be auctioned off. Bush wore the red, white and blue socks while performing the ceremonial coin toss with his wife Barbara Bush at Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas, on February 5, 2017.

“The president has donated the patriotic socks he wore and a color photograph of the moment featuring both his and the first lady’s autographs. The winning bidder will also receive a personalized letter of congratulations from President Bush. In recent years, the president’s love of colorful socks has been noted when he wears them during public appearances,” read an announcement on the website of the Diocese of Portland.

The Diocese says the winning bidder will also get a personalized letter from the former president, who is a longtime summer resident of Kennebunkport. The auction will take place at a diocesan event in Portland on Friday.

The Harvest Ball is an annual fundraising event for Harvest, the magazine of the Diocese of Portland.
