Pope Francis said on Wednesday that the Virgin Mary is not co-redemptrix with Christ, an attribution that the Catholic Church reserves exclusively to her son, but which some theological movements in recent decades have tried to also give to the Mother of God.
“She never wanted for herself something that was of her son,” Pope Francis said Thursday. “She never introduced herself as co-redemptrix. No. Disciple,” he said, meaning that Mary saw herself as a disciple of Jesus.
