    Victims of Las Vegas shooting remembered at funeral Masses, vigils

    Several of the victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas were laid to rest in the past week. During their funerals, people were praised for their heroism that night, and remembered for the joy they brought their friends and families. Assumption College put out a statement saying the mass shooting is a “harsh reminder of the darkness that attempts to consume the world in which we live.”

    In Holy Land, Franciscan finds peace in prayer, ministering to pilgrims

    As the Franciscans celebrate the 800th anniversary of their presence in the Holy Land, the sacred role the 300 friars from 34 countries continue to play is a blessing. The Church of the Visitation is one of 29 shrines in the care of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. On a busy day, the church receives up to 20 pilgrimage groups. The friars have begun to work on the garden to make it more inviting for pilgrims and visitors, so they will stay for a bit longer than the average half-hour visit and contemplate the miracle of the place.

    Bishop Dominique Guigbile of Dapaong, Togo, says a “climate of psychosis, fear, mistrust and suspicion is now embedded in the population [of Togo], dangerously compromising our fundamental and legitimate aspirations to fraternity and coexistence.” Demonstrators took to the streets in August, protesting plans to extend the presidency of Faure Gnassingbe, who entered office in 2005 after the 38-year rule of his father.
