Young people from around the world will meet in the Vatican in March to discuss next year’s Synod of Bishops’ meeting on “Young people, faith and vocational discernment,” which will take place in October 2018 in Rome.
Pope Francis said Christians are not “prophets of doom” but rather missionaries of hope who are tasked with proclaiming Jesus’ death and resurrection, which is “the nucleus of Christian faith.” The pope was continuing his reflections on hope during his weekly general audience.
Rohingya Muslims do not have high hopes that the visit by Pope Francis to Myanmar and Bangladesh scheduled for Nov. 27-Dec. 2 will make any difference in Myanmar’s ongoing persecution of the Rohingya. Syed Alam, the imam of a mosque at a refugee camp, said the military and Buddhist nationalists need to “change their mindset” about Muslims before change can happen.
During his daily Mass, Pope Francis asked people to take a few moments of their day to think about Jesus and “how much he loved us” and “how he walked alone toward the cross” amid a lack of understanding and support from his companions.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, said ministering by couples to couples is better done by “people who have walked in their shoes.” The cardinal admitted he did not “have a clue” how to answer some of the questions on couples’ difficulties, which his own nieces and nephews had put to him.
