The Swiss government is announcing a summer visit by Pope Francis.
Peru’s replica of the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro was set on fire days before Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in the South American nation.
“When we heard Pope Francis was coming to Chile, we hoped that he would visit us here, and I was so proud and happy, when I heard that this was the first female prison he has chosen to visit,” said Sister Nelly Leon, a member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd and chaplain of the prison.
Francis’s visit will celebrate a 46-year Vatican-Bangladesh relationship, said Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario, archbishop of Dhaka. “Our nation is like a river,” the cardinal said. “Sometimes you see strong currents fueled by strong winds, but at the riverbed there is calmness. And this comes from the basic religiosity and pluralism of people.”
“There are those who remain buried in the rubble of life,” Pope Francis said in his homily speaking about earthquakes which have devastated parts of Italy. He spoke to an estimated 20,000 gathered for Mass during his visit in northern Italy. “And there are those, like you, who with the help of God rise from the rubble to rebuild.”
Pope Francis on Tuesday said that fear is a poor adviser for countries struggling to set policies for immigrants and refugees, suggested that Catholicism’s ban on women priests is “forever,” and also confirmed that the Vatican will participate in talks to try to address Venezuela’s tensions under President Nicolas Maduro.
