New L.A. media platform to feature Crux writers

Beginning Friday, July 1, the feast of St. Junípero Serra, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will launch a new multimedia platform called "Angelus News," featuring a weekly magazine that will be a print home for Crux Editor John Allen and Crux Vatican Correspondent Inés San Martín.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has announced a new multimedia platform, Angelus News, featuring a weekly magazine, also called Angelus, which will be the print home of Crux editor John L. Allen Jr. and Crux Vatican correspondent Inés San Martín.

Angelus News will also feature a daily digital edition. The launch date is set for Friday, July 1, the feast day of St. Junípero Serra, honored by Pope Francis as the great evangelizer of the West Coast.

Angelus News will reach Catholics and non-Catholics alike about the good works in the parishes, schools and ministries not only in the Archdiocese, but around the world. Angelus News will feature:

  • A weekly newsmagazine, Angelus. The name was chosen because it is the prayer between the patroness of the Archdiocese, Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of the Angels, and St. Gabriel the Archangel – the namesake of the first mission built in the Archdiocese.
  • A complete daily digital edition (com) including video, audio, photo galleries and slideshows, which will be updated often throughout each day.
  • Social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
  • Daily digital newsletter called “Always Forward” after the motto of the Angelus News patron, St. Junípero Serra, beginning July 18.

“Angelus News came about because of the hard work of dozens of committed Catholics in the Church in Los Angeles,” said John David (JD) Long-Garcia, the editor-in-chief of Angelus News. “The team came together to find a way to update our news and reporting platforms to better serve contemporary Catholics.”

In addition to Allen and San Martín, Angelus News will feature writing by Kathryn Jean Lopez, also a Crux contributor; popular Catholic writers and speakers Grazie Pozo Christie and Mike Aquilina; and best-selling author Scott Hahn, who will provide a weekly Scripture column.

Angelus News will retain contributors already familiar to readers in the Los Angeles area, including Archbishop José H. Gomez, Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron of the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, Father Ronald Rolheiser and Heather King.

Angelus News will also provide international Catholic news coverage through a partnership with Catholic News Agency (CNA).

“Following on the footsteps of St. Junípero Serra, a man of heroic virtue and holiness who had only one burning ambition — to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the peoples of the New World, we now need to send missionaries to proclaim the Gospel in this new digital era,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez.

“The message of the Gospel never changes no matter where it is preached or what media we use to deliver it. But we need to always be looking for the ‘language’ that best communicates our Lord’s saving truths,” Gomez said.
