The priest in charge of the largest Roman Catholic church in New England is inviting members of the public to pray for the soul of former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino on a day set aside to commemorate the departed.

Menino died Thursday morning at age 71. He will lie in state at the city’s historic Faneuil Hall on Sunday and he will have a private burial Monday in his Hyde Park neighborhood.

The rector for the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Friday announced plans to pray for Menino on Sunday, during a Mass set to begin at 11:30 a.m.

The rector, Rev. Kevin O’Leary, will celebrate the Mass, which will occur on All Soul’s Day. That day is set aside every year to commemorate all the faithful who have departed.

Menino was Roman Catholic.
