For a couple seconds, Notre Dame believed it had knocked off defending national champ Florida State.
However, a two-yard touchdown pass from Everett Golson with 13 seconds remaining was called back due to offensive pass interference. After moving back 15 yards for fourth-and-goal from the 18, Golson’s pass was off the mark, leaving the Irish just short of its upset bid over the Seminoles, 31-27.
“We execute that play every day,” Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. “And we do it legally and that’s the way we coach it. We don’t coach illegal plays.”
Golson finished with 313 yards and three touchdowns on 31-of-52 passing. However, he also tossed two costly interceptions in Florida State territory.
Tarean Folston led the way on the ground, rushing for 120 yards on 21 carries.
Meanwhile, Boston College also saw a late upset bid denied.
Trailing by four, the Eagles had the ball on the Clemson 29. However, running back Tyler Rouse dropped a sure touchdown and Boston College turned the ball over on downs before falling, 17-13, to the Tigers.
“We had some plays we could have made,” said Eagles quarterback Tyler Murphy. “It almost brings back the same taste as Colorado State, a game we just let slip away.”
Murphy finished the day throwing for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-19 passing, but was bottled up on the ground—55 yards on 13 carries. Charlie Callinan led Boston College in receiving with 64 yards on three grabs.
The Irish (6-1)—ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25—will head into the bye week licking their bruises. The team travels to take on Navy on Nov. 1.
The Eagles (4-3) will travel to take on ACC cellar-dweller Wake Forest next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
