I recently had some furniture delivered and was in a room with one of the movers when he picked up a chair, then dropped it and grabbed his back in pain. Apparently they are not supposed to move existing furniture. He quickly said to me, “Please, tell my boss that you asked me to move this chair so I can get paid if I have to miss work.”

Now, I don’t know how these things work, and have no idea if he was correct about his sick pay or not. I don’t think he was faking it; he really did seem to be in genuine pain.

I don’t like to lie, but I did feel guilty about not having moved the chair myself before the movers arrived. So I did as he asked. Later, a friend told me I shouldn’t have because the guy might have been running a scam. Was I wrong?
