I’m a nature lover. My ideal summer vacation is to take my family to a national park, where we can hike, camp, and see some of the greatest, vastest, and most awe-inspiring natural landscapes in the world. But recently I’ve been reading that tourism to the natural parks is endangering the parks themselves, perhaps even ruining them for future generations. There’s the litter and car exhaust. Then there’s damage done by hikers and bikers wandering off trail. Tourists even unknowingly carry tree diseases that can ravage whole ecosystems. All this causes me to wonder: If I really love nature so much, should I protect our parks by staying away?
