My husband gives expensive gifts to his family that we can’t afford. How do I stop him without hurting his feelings?

My husband tends to give his siblings and their children extravagant presents on their birthdays and Christmas — too expensive, I think, for our budget and far more expensive than the presents we get in return.

I think he’s a little insecure about his own success in their eyes, so I’m a bit reluctant to discuss it with him. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I also don’t want to waste our resources in order to keep up a pretense unnecessarily.
