A friend’s daughter who is taking a biology course at her college has a lab course where they conduct experiments on animals, mostly white lab rats that I think are bred for the purpose. They have drilled holes in the shells of live turtles and stuck some sort of needle into the brains of the rats to stimulate their muscles.

The young woman is Catholic and thinks that these practices are cruel. I was surprised to hear this sort of stuff still goes on; I thought most universities had stopped using animals in science experiments.

Her professor said he understands her feelings, but he can’t excuse her from the experiments when everyone else is doing them. So her dilemma is to follow her conscience, flunk the course, or withdraw and lose credit for a required course.

Any advice?
