In a new pastoral letter released on Wednesday, Cardinal Donald Wuerl called for a “fresh emphasis” on combatting the “divisive evil” of racism. His letter comes on the heels of the recent announcement that the U.S. bishops have formed an ad hoc committee on racism following the deadly event in Charlottesville, Virginia this past August.

Faith leaders gathered Monday near the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument in Washington, D.C. to commemorate King’s 1957 essay about “Nonviolence and Racial Justice.” Bishop George V. Murry of Youngstown, Ohio, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism said, “As a society, we need to stop making excuses and commit to nonviolence.”
