Congolese church leaders, including the nation’s cardinal, condemned security forces’ attacks on Catholic protesters that left at least five dead and 120 people detained.
Witnesses to the recent attack on a Coptic Christian church in Cairo and a nearby Coptic-owned shop, said it was the worshippers and residents of the neighborhood who kept the number of fatalities down and not the police.
Indonesia planned to deploy 250,000 security personnel across the country ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations, particularly in Christian-majority areas.
Hundreds of Muslim demonstrators assaulted an unlicensed church south of Cairo, an Egyptian Coptic Christian diocese said on Saturday, in the latest assault on members of the country’s Coptic minority.
“We were beaten up in front of the police, but they did nothing,” Father Anish Emmanuel said referring to an incident in which Hindu extremists attacked Christians in India. “They set our vehicle on fire, forcing us to take shelter inside the police station.”
After the death of their teenage son on his third day of school, his family says they just want to know what happened. Sharoon Masih, the boy who was killed, was a Christian in a predominantly Muslim school. Some believe he was killed because of his religion and minority status.
