The retired archbishop of Newark has moved to Illinois, allowing the archdiocese to finally sell off his lavish property.
Two seminarians who said they had been abused by former-Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick reached settlements with three dioceses in the mid-2000s. What is less clear was the depth of involvement of each bishop, all of them from New Jersey, in the settlements, and what they did with that knowledge.
At his installation Mass on Friday, Cardinal Joseph Tobin said, “The church senses a responsibility for the world, not simply as yet another institutional presence or a benevolent NGO, but as a movement of salt, light and leaven for the world’s transformation.”
Recently tapped by Pope Francis as a new cardinal, Archbishop Joseph Tobin is now headed for Newark, New Jersey, to replace Archbishop John Myers. Saying faith is “a willingness to be surprised by God,” Tobin added on Monday, “the last weeks have been exceptionally ‘faith filled’.”
