Churchgoers are getting used to the new reality of “All Saints — Todos Los Santos” parish in Waterbury, Connecticut. Formed by the merger of four parishes, the new entity is part of a restructuring plan being implemented by the Archdiocese of Hartford.
The Archdiocese of Hartford has implemented a plan to consolidate 212 parishes into 127 new entities. The community at the parish of St. Anne – which did not survive the process – is questioning what will become of the parish’s flagship ministry, a soup kitchen. Parish staff, volunteers and soup kitchen guests say they have been told the soup kitchen will remain at the church “for the foreseeable future,” but that there are no guarantees as the planning process moves forward at the local level.
The Archdiocese of Hartford has announced that 59 parishes across three counties will be merged, and 26 of those buildings will close. Archbishop Leonard Blair said, “To try to hold onto something, a structure, a skeleton that no longer corresponds to the realities of today ultimately can be discouraging and diminishing.”
