    About 2,000 pilgrims from the Diocese of Bridgeport took a one-day pilgrimage to Washington to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and the shrine’s new rosary walk and garden. The garden features a white Carrara marble sculpture of Our Lady of Fatima with the three child-visionaries at her feet, Lucia dos Santos and Jacinta and Francisco Marto. On the opposite side is the crucified Christ, sculpted from the same kind of marble.

    In urban Washington, D.C., it’s not like young adults don’t have other options, so when a thousand of them braved sweltering heat and downpours of rain on Saturday, something special must have been happening. They came together for a ‘grassroots pilgrimage’ in the spirit of World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland, at a shrine dedicated to St. Pope John Paul II.

    In January 2017, artisans will begin applying the mosaic to the basilica’s major interior dome, with the goal of completing the project before Christmas. Composed of more than 14 million pieces of colorful Venetian glass, it depicts the rich diversity of the Church in the United States.
