A discussion about young people at the National Black Catholic Congress centered on key themes: Why young black adult Catholics stay in the church; why they leave; how they live out their faith; how to foster more vocations; and the state of race relations in the U.S.
Father Bryan Massingale, a professor at Fordham University in New York, acknowledged that Catholic colleges and universities likely have diversity plans and strategies in place, but he said such guidelines will simply sit on the shelves unless there are concrete actions behind them.
Seminaries have started offering courses on Black Lives Matter, the movement and the theology related to it. The focus is on church and community, in order to address police brutality, concerns about violent crime and help people understand the power of voting.
Currently, black lives are sometimes treated as if they mattered less than other lives, and that’s a gross injustice. Hence, the purpose of the rallying cry: to give black lives singular attention and singular mention, because they suffer singular degradation.
