West Virginia’s Catholic bishop had a message Sept. 29 for members of police and fire departments, Emergency Medical Services personnel and those serving in the U.S. military: “Hold your heads high. You have noble professions.”
As tensions continue to mount in the United States, law enforcement, police officers and first responders should not be disheartened and work to better themselves in service to their local community, said Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas.
Public safety officials, first responders and Catholics gathered to celebrate the fifth annual Blue Mass Sept. 11 at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.
Auxiliary Bishop George A. Sheltz of Galveston-Houston, who celebrated the Sept. 29 Blue Mass, recalled the funeral a year ago at the co-cathedral for Houston Police Sgt. Steve Perez, who drowned trying to report to his command post in the midst of the Hurricane Harvey flooding.
