Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Marcello Semeraro as the replacement for Cardinal Angelo Becciu as head of the Vatican’s saint-making office after Becciu was fired last month over allegations of embezzlement.

The Council of Cardinals discussed ways the Curia can better serve the local churches during their 20th round of meetings in Rome this week. The cardinals proposed “a spirit of healthy decentralization” by transferring some faculties from Vatican dicasteries to local bishops or episcopal conferences.
There were only small changes this time during the meeting with Pope Francis and selected cardinals this week. The aim of the Council of Cardinals is to reform the Roman Curia and last fall it established the new dicasteries. During this session the council focused on regulation within the departments.
