Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto has joined Western bishops and other dioceses across Canada in withholding funds from the overseas development agency of the Canadian bishops’ conference.
Bishop Peter Musikuwa told the president of Malawi the country needs to fix its power supply problem, because it is affecting economic growth in the country. In Malawi, over 90 percent of power comes from hydroelectric dams, but lack of investment in infrastructure has led to rolling blackouts, which hurt not only businesses, but also the nation’s hospitals and other medical facilities.
Founded in 1966, the Italian-Latin American International Organization seeks to increase “economic, social, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation” between Latin American countries and Italy. Commemorating the organization’s 50th anniversary, Pope Francis said that to achieve the goal of promoting development and cooperation, the organization must first identify the potential of Latin American countries, who are “rich in history, culture, natural resources” and “good and caring” people.
In a new motu proprio, meaning a legal document issued under the pope’s personal authority, Pope Francis on Wednesday created a new dicastery, the overall term for a Vatican department, for Promoting Integral Human Development, and tapped Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana as its first head.
