As the Vatican prepares two of its major global events of 2018-2019, the World Meeting of Families and World Youth Day, it seems prepared for the headaches.
Former Irish president Mary McAleese has been stopped from attending a women’s conference at the Vatican, causing organizers to move the event to another location.
Pope Francis’s decision to convalidate the marriage of two flight attendants in the air sent waves of turbulence through the Catholic blogosphere. “The pope saw an opportunity and he worked it,” said Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life.
Since 2004, the Vatican office now known as the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life has had a special section dedicated to sports.
Dr. Gabriella Gambino and Dr. Linda Ghisoni have been appointed undersecretaries for the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. The appointment makes them two of the highest-ranking women in the Vatican. The office is responsible for projects relating to the apostolate of laity, families, and the institution of marriage, within the Church.
The new number two at the all-important Dicastery for Family, Laity, and Life is a young Brazilian priest not only in sync with the ideas and outlook of Pope Francis, but who has a long history of friendship and collaboration with the pontiff.
