A federal bankruptcy judge has ruled that — with specific limitations — an attorney for victims of sexual abuse may question retired Bishop Matthew H. Clark of Rochester under oath about his knowledge of sexual abuse during his years as head of the diocese.
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a former Roman Catholic bishop must answer questions about the history of child sexual abuse in the Rochester diocese, despite protests from his lawyers that the cleric’s Alzheimer’s makes him unable to testify.
In an unusual public spat, the Catholic diocese of Peoria, Illinois, is accusing the Rochester, New York diocese of trying to “sabotage” the beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
Supporters of the canonization cause for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen have been invited to take part in a novena starting Dec. 12 to “petition God unceasingly to remove all obstacles” for the beatification of the media pioneer, author and evangelist.
The Dec. 3 announcement by the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, that the Vatican has decided to postpone the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen has led to a grassroots effort to have Masses said all over the world to pray his beatification will go forward.
