On Sunday in Romania, Pope Francis beatified seven bishops of the Eastern rite church who refused to abandon their faith under the communist dictatorship, which wasn’t overthrown until 1989.
The martyrs of different Christian churches throughout the Middle East are together in heaven, interceding for peace in the region and enjoying the unity for which all Christians on earth must strive, Pope Francis said.
On Friday Pope Francis and Mar Gewargis III of the Assyrian Church of the East joined their voices in solidarity with persecuted Christians, calling for a political solution to bring peace to the Middle East, stopping the exodus of Christians from the region.
After the bodies of 20 Coptic Christians killed by the Islamic State in Libya were returned to Egypt, the head of the Coptic church in Great Britain said their deaths “provided an opportunity for a deep and genuine unity among the Christian church worldwide.”
