In Michigan, a priest who has been accused of embezzlement, was in court asking that $800,000 seized by police as part of an investigation be released to him. He is accused of embezzling $100,000 or more, but the church is missing millions of dollars.
Priests in Indonesia’s Ruteng Diocese met with the apostolic nuncio in the country asking for the Vatican to intervene in a case of embezzlement of more than $100,000 in church funds by the local bishop. The bishop is accused of misappropriating the funds for a woman he was having an affair with.
In response to the embezzlement of more than $100,000 of church funds by a bishop and rumors of a romantic affair, dozens of Indonesian priests from Ruteng Diocese submitted letters of resignation and demanded that the diocese be restructured.
Monsignor William A. Dombrow, a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, faces federal charges of embezzling more than $500,000. He allegedly siphoned off funds intended for care of retired archdiocesan priests, who are credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors, at Villa St. Joseph where he served as the rector.
Prosecutors say 58-year-old Michelle Medrick embezzled the funds sometime between 2008 and last year. Medrick admitted to writing nearly 1,500 checks made payable to “cash” from Catholic Charities’ account.
A longtime employee of Catholic Charities has been fired over an alleged fraud scheme that resulted in the loss of $1.9 million over a period of seven years, with an internal investigation still ongoing and the employee still unidentified.
