Bishop Giorgio Bertin, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Mogadishu, Somalia, has urged stronger support for new Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who took office in February, as well as local governments responding to the drought and beginning development projects.
On Sunday, an agreement was reached between the House and Senate on an Omnibus bill, a funding bill for the rest of the 2017 fiscal year that could be voted on this week. The bill would increase funding for international famine relief, but would not cut funding for abortion provider Planned Parenthood.
Cardinal Collins of Toronto said that while it was “commendable and necessary” to support the rights of women and young girls, the Canadian prime minister’s “public comments suggest that unless a woman has access to abortion or contraception, she is not empowered or able to realize her full potential.”
