Caravan of Louisiana parishioners takes supplies, hope to Harvey victims

Recovery continues in southern Texas after Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the region Aug. 25-30. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain. Flooding inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 17,000 rescues. At least 70 people died.

Pope asks new bishops from Florida, Texas about hurricanes’ aftermath

Bishop William A. Wack of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida, and Bishop Robert M. Coerver of Lubbock, Texas, went up to shake the hand of Pope Francis on Thursday, and as soon as he heard where they were from, the pope asked about Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma and the people in Texas and Florida.

Bishops pray for ‘safety, care’ of all hit hard by two massive hurricanes

The U.S. bishops’ Executive Committee issued a statement saying, “At this time of initial recovery, we mourn the loss of life, homes and other property, and the harm to the natural environment, and we pray for all those affected and in need of assistance” in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

After Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and with the 16th anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers tomorrow, Christians may naturally feel themselves a little stunned, wondering how a loving God could permit such tragedies and acts of horror. It’s worth reminding ourselves of a line from Pope Francis: “There is no such thing as low-cost Christianity.”

Knights of Columbus raise $1.3 million for Harvey, Irma victims

“We have seen incredible generosity from our members, and we invite others to join us in providing aid that is urgently needed,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson, in a statement released on Sept. 8. The Knights have been raising money for victims of Harvey and Irma.

FEMA sued for discrimination against churches devastated by Harvey

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is being sued by three churches damaged by Hurricane Harvey that are being denied relief funding because of their status as religious institutions. Since the 1990s, FEMA has banned houses of worship from receiving federal aid — a policy that the religious liberty law firm Becket is now challenging.
