The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops, the public policy arm of the state’s bishops, said federal agents seemed to disregard their own policy in the matter when they detained an undocumented 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy on her way to the hospital for surgery. Bishop James A. Tamayo of Laredo said the action was “inhumane.”
Recent negotiations between the U.S. and Iraq have led to the deportation of more than 100 Chaldean Christians who were residing in the country, leading the Catholic bishops to write a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security urging him to halt the arrests.
Dozens of Chaldean Christians, who had criminal records, were arrested by federal immigration officials over the weekend in the Detroit metropolitan area after Iraq agreed to take them back in the country. The church community in Detroit said that those people had already served their sentences and are now “great citizens.”
