Pope Francis marked the memory of nine seminarians who were martyred during the Spanish Civil War in 1934-37.
The beatifications of 19 martyrs in Algeria will be a “great joy” to the Church and will help unite Christians and Muslims of the country, said a French-Algerian archbishop.
Archbishop Paul Desfarges of Algiers has said that Bishop Pierre Claverie and his 18 companions, who were martyred in Algeria between 1994 and 1996, are “models for our lives as disciples today and tomorrow.”
On Friday Pope Francis and Mar Gewargis III of the Assyrian Church of the East joined their voices in solidarity with persecuted Christians, calling for a political solution to bring peace to the Middle East, stopping the exodus of Christians from the region.
Presiding at a Mass for the beatification of martyrs Father Tullio Maruzzo and Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro, a Vatican official prayed that “their martyrdom would inspire in everyone courageous Christian witness, a consistent life and boundless commitment to others.”
