The current fracas surrounding Benedict XVI and a new book on priestly celibacy is eerily reminiscent of the tempest that erupted in 2003/2004 around St. John Paul II’s alleged endorsement of Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion of the Christ,” expressed in the infamous soundbite, “It is as it was.”
Jim Caviezel is best known for playing Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ.” Most recently, he he played John Reese on the CBS series “Person of Interest.” He says St. John Paul II, and his 1999 Letter to Artists, had a great influence on his artistic career.
Both “Doctor Strange” and “Hacksaw” are by directors who are Christians: one Catholic, one Protestant. Both filmmakers have dealt in past films with questions of faith, the divine, and the demonic from an explicitly Christian point of view, and their new films also raise moral questions.
