Orders of women and men religious received, collectively, $28 million in financial help from the National Religious Retirement Office, the umbrella group that coordinates the annual Retirement Fund for Religious campaign in parishes and dioceses nationwide.
Bishops, women religious, canon lawyers and others met Sept. 25-26 outside Chicago to help diocesan leaders understand the precipitous decline in numbers of women in religious life and what that means to the Church.
On Dec. 9-10, an annual collection for retired religious will be taken up across America. It’s an effort to deal with a fairly staggering situation: By 2027, retired religious are projected to outnumber wage-earners by three to one, and a 2016 study predicted that by 2030, religious orders will be looking at a $10 billion deficit in terms of providing retirement care.
