Father Georgi Mamaladze, a high-profile priest in Georgia, was arrested at the Tbilisi airport on Friday with cyanide in his suitcase. Prosecutors believe he was plotting to poison a senior cleric, possibly Patriarch Ilia, head of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In Tblisi’s Georgian Orthodox Cathedral, believed to contain the burial spot of Christ’s seamless garment, Pope Francis on Saturday said the historical divisions among Christians today are “the real lacerations” that wound the body of Jesus.
Pope Francis travels to Georgia and Azerbaijan over the weekend, and each stop presents its own unique challenges. In Georgia he’ll visit an overwhelmingly Orthodox nation constantly at odds with Russia, and in Azerbaijan he’ll encounter a largely Shi’a Muslim society, in both cases pushing peace and reconciliation.
