Founded in 1966, the Italian-Latin American International Organization seeks to increase “economic, social, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation” between Latin American countries and Italy. Commemorating the organization’s 50th anniversary, Pope Francis said that to achieve the goal of promoting development and cooperation, the organization must first identify the potential of Latin American countries, who are “rich in history, culture, natural resources” and “good and caring” people.
The Vatican confirmed on Monday that Pope Francis will be visiting Chile and Peru next January. This will be his sixth visit to Latin America, and once again, the Argentine pontiff is skipping his home country of Argentina.
After a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, the president of the Peruvian bishops’ conference said that the pope would like to dedicate a Synod of Bishops to the indigenous people of the Amazon and the evangelization in the region.
The inhabitants of one of the areas most affected by the recent floods in northern Peru, asked local bishop for some Bibles because the ones they had were lost. They said that the ” Word of God is essential for them and for the continuity,” news brief from the archdiocese reads.
The indigenous communities of Awajun and Wampis in Peru finally won the legal battle to be consulted about oil drilling on their land, a right supported by Catholic Church leaders. Zebelio Kayap Jempekit, an Awajun leader who is a plaintiff in the case, said that this ruling shows that lives and health are more important than economic gain.
