Pope Francis’s recent message to the pontifical mission societies is a reminder that the church’s primary mission is to proclaim the Gospel, not run institutions with businesslike efficiency, said Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.
A missionary or church reality that is truly inspired by the Holy Spirit “manifests predilection for the poor and vulnerable as a sign and reflection of the Lord’s own preference for them,” Pope Francis told the pontifical mission societies.
Leaders from the Pontifical Mission Societies spent a day of their national meeting bending the ear of members of Congress, urging action on climate change, the protection of immigrants and religious freedom.
As the Church prepares to celebrate World Mission Day on Sunday, the head of the Vatican’s evangelization congregation said the timing of the day with the youth synod provides an opportunity to remind young people they too are called to spread the Gospel.
“In Christ,” Pope Francis said, “our life is itself a mission! We are mission, because we are God’s love poured out, God’s holiness created in his own image.”
Pope Francis reminded Catholics to support evangelization efforts worldwide through the Pontifical Mission Societies.
