Vatican officials celebrate funeral for homeless man in Rome

A Chinese official on Monday denied Beijing has imposed coercive birth control measures among Muslim minority women, following an outcry over a tweet by the Chinese Embassy in Washington claiming that government polices had freed women of the Uighur ethnic group from being “baby-making machines.”
Women’s rights activist Reggie Littlejohn has criticized China for hypocrisy in encouraging Chinese families to have more children while punishing Uighur Muslims for doing the same.
An official Chinese state media outlet has denied any imminent change to the country’s national two-child policy.
The Vatican’s representative to the United Nations said “corruption, protracted conflicts and other man-made disasters” are the cause of entrenched poverty in the developing world, not a “healthy, growing population.” He also called on the world body to “respect life” when it comes to giving international aid.
At the African theology summit in Rome, Catholic Church leaders from the African continent weighed in on the efforts made by NGO’s and Western governments to enact population control measures. Congolese Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo warns against the dangers, and Beninese Archbishop Berthelemy Adoukonou raises concerns of a “new colonization.”
