Pope Francis and Italy’s president on Saturday marked a newly established annual day to honor doctors, nurses and other health care workers, exactly one year after the nation’s first known native case of COVID-19 emerged.
As Italy’s political crisis deepens, the Italian bishops no longer appear content to stand on the sidelines.
During a visit to the Quirinale Palace on Saturday to meet Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, Pope Francis insisted that employment and pro-family policies are the real keys to a society’s growth, not “speculative” business models calculated to generate short-term profits but lacking a long-term vision for providing “stable and dignified work.”
