A leading official of the Russian Orthodox Church says he “values” the Vatican’s position on Ukraine, which he said “precludes the use of the Holy See for speculations aimed at further escalating the Ukrainian crisis and moving the country’s conflict into a purely religious domain.”
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, will be the most senior Vatican figure in Moscow in nearly two decades when he visits August 20-24. Catholics in Russia hopes he uses the visit to help the local Catholic community, in addition to speaking about international affairs and ties with the dominant Russian Orthodox Church.
Before leaving for a trip to Moscow, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin sat down with an Italian newspaper to discuss his hopes for this diplomatic step-forward in Vatican/Russia relations. The Church’s number two said that in order to achieve peace countries must set aside partisan interests and commit to dialogue.
Former FBI Director James Comey, who recently made headlines for his testimony regarding President Trump, was seen accompanying his father to Mass at a New Jersey Catholic Church. Comey regularly attended the church when he was a boy, but is now a member of the United Methodist Church.
