    Pittsburgh diocese panel proposes merging 188 parishes to 48

    A radical new plan in the Diocese of Pittsburgh could reduce the number of parishes to a third of their current number. A diocesan commission is recommending keeping multiple worship sites open in the parishes, although some churches would close. The number of active priests in the Diocese of Pittsburgh is expected to decline from 211 to 112 by 2025.

    Archbishop Robert J. Carlson said that while “acknowledging the hurt and anger, [the people of St. Louis] must not fuel the fires of hatred and division” in the wake of the acquittal of a white former police officer accused of murdering a black suspect. Carlson said, “We must work together for a better, stronger, safer community, one founded upon respect for each other, and one in which we see our neighbor as another self.”

    Indian priest says Yemeni captors did him no physical harm

    Father Tom Uzhunnalil,a Salesian, was kidnapped from a home for senior citizens in Aden, southern Yemen, established by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in March 2016. Four nuns were killed during the attack. On Saturday in Rome, following his release earlier this week, Uzhunnalil said that his captors never harmed him, even if in some videos they made it appear that way in an effort to get a speedy response in negotiations.
