The Philadelphia Inquirer daily newspaper reported Aug. 16 that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is investigating allegations of sexual harassment from a former student at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., says religious freedom is “one of the most fundamental rights” in the United States, and the founding fathers “saw a vital connection between religion and the character needed for republican self-government.”
Father Bernard E. Shlesinger III – director of spiritual formation in the theology division of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania – has been named the new auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Before entering the priesthood, he was a captain in the United States Air Force, flying a C-130E Hercules transport aircraft.
Despite the sex abuse scandals and widespread financial difficulties, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is experiencing an uptick in seminary enrollment. Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Senior credits that in part to the good will generated by Pope Francis’s visit last year.
