Snap elections in the United Kingdom did not go according to plan. Prime Minister Theresa May hoped to secure the largest majority in decades for her Conservative Party, but instead saw a surge by the opposition Labour Party. The result is a weakened prime minister, and uncertainty ahead.
The United Kingdom is on high alert in the wake of the May 22 terrorist attack in Manchester which killed 22 people. Religious leaders have condemned the attack, and stories of heroism – both large and small – are beginning to emerge: The homeless guys who picked out the nails from the girls’ faces, the local residents who opened their doors to stranded teenagers, and the queues that formed at blood banks. These are the images, said Prime Minister Theresa May, “that embody the spirit of Manchester and the spirit of Britain.”
