On Friday the Vatican’s Supreme Court announced that after investigating, they have pardoned Father Hermann Geissler, an Austrian priest who formerly worked at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and who was accused of making sexual advances during confession.

The sanctions the Vatican imposed against Luis Fernando Figari, the whistleblower Pedro Salinas said, amount to a “golden exile, where he can live comfortably with all his needs taken care of.” As a layman, Figari was not subject to the same defrocking punishment used to sanction abusive priests.
The Knights of Malta have stated that the decision regarding the recent dismissal of the order’s former Grand Chancellor was an internal matter. The statement arrived two days after the announcement that Pope Francis has established a select group to look into the matter.
