Pope Francis has blamed Europe and the United States for selling weapons in war zones, fueling conflicts and causing victims in Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.
The growing use of autonomous weapons systems poses serious risks to global peace and stability, a Vatican representative told a U.N. meeting in Geneva.
Germany’s Catholic and Protestant churches criticized their country’s growing arms sales to non-Nato states, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and demanded tighter export controls on weapons manufacturers. Government licenses and arms exports in Germany grew 96 percent in 2015.
