During a youth vigil on Saturday to rally enthusiasm for the Catholic Church’s next World Youth Day, to be held in Panama in 2019, Pope Francis told young people they’re the future even if he may not be around to see it. “I don’t know if it will be me, but the pope will be in Panama!” he told the crowd at the St. Mary Major basilica.
Panama, which will host World Youth Day in 2019, is a small country, but leading bishops from Panama insist the local church will be able to organize the event, calling it a “a bridge between two continents” and a multicultural environment.
The Italian news agency ANSA said that Anna Maria Jacobini was discovered dead in the bed of her hotel room on Friday while covering Pope Francis’ trip to Poland and is believed to have died the previous night. It said she had complained to colleagues Thursday night of feeling tired.
It was expected, but the announcement at the end of the closing Mass in Krakow that the next WYD in 2019 will be in Panama was greeted with wild excitement. Panamanians shared their joy with Crux.
