Bishop Victor Hlolo Phalana of Klerksdorp, the chair of the social action department of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), blames the violence on the “xenophobic populism” promoted by some politicians.
Congo’s new cardinal will use his position to highlight Africa’s problems, while also bringing a lifelong passion for human rights to the international stage, said Catholic associates.
One of Nigeria’s leading bishops says the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa is “sad, and it is hard to know how Africa got to this stage.”
Nigerian Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyaken has joined African religious leaders to demand quick implementation of the latest peace agreement on South Sudan, which the government and rebel groups signed last year.
