HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An atheist was allowed to give the invocation at a Huntsville City Council meeting, which has used mostly Christian ministers at past meetings.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1rpkctN) that Kelly McCauley’s 90-second invocation at Thursday’s meeting began with “Dearly Beloved” and ended with “Let it be so” — and no reaction from a packed city council chamber.

McCauley is a member of the board of directors of the North Alabama Freethought Association.

The city council invocations in Huntsville have been a contentious issue this year.

In June, a member of the Wiccan faith says he was set to give the opening invocation at a Huntsville council meeting until the plan was publicized and he was asked about his faith. He said he was then told he was no longer invited.
