My husband and I are most of the way through a kitchen renovation. It was all going fine, until my husband and the contractor got into a dispute over the quality of some cabinetry, and my husband refused to pay the bill. I think he was being unreasonable — and obviously, so did the contractor. He walked off the job. Now the kitchen is unfinished, my husband and the contractor aren’t speaking, and our kitchen is unusable. Is it ethical for me to quietly pay the contractor what he believes he’s owed — it’s not that much — in the interest of getting the job done and getting him out of our lives forever?

Sincerely,
Stoveless
