Revelations that a leading holiday park company in the UK discriminated against people with certain Irish surnames “won’t come as a surprise” the country’s Traveller community, says their national chaplain.
Cardinal Peter Turkson, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, brought medicine and supplies to a Roma community settlement as a sign of support for those who are often forgotten during the coronavirus pandemic.
England’s national Catholic chaplain for gypsies, Roma and Travellers says a new television documentary will only “reinforce … prejudice” against the communities.
“History tells us that Christians too, including Catholics, are not strangers to such evil. I would like to ask your forgiveness for this,” Pope Francis said while telling Romania’s gypsies that he’s sorry for their mistreatment.
Predjudice and stigma against gypsies is growing, Italian gypsies say, but the pope is not here for it.
Members of Italy’s Gypsy communities must look to God to hold on to the hope of a future where they are no longer discriminated against or segregated, Pope Francis said.
