    Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the Second Vatican Council continues to have an enduring impact on the Catholic Church and on the papacy of Pope Francis. That gathering of bishops from around the world presented a new paradigm of a “world church — a church with a global dimension,” said the cardinal, who is the Vatican’s secretary of state.

    Gregory Baum, an ex-priest who was a participant at Vatican II, has died at the age of 94. Baum attended all three sessions of the council as a peritus, or theological expert, consulting on “Nostra Aetate”; the Decree on Ecumenism; and the Declaration on Religious Freedom. He later caused controversy over his views on women’s ordination and same-sex marriage.
