The relics of St. Katharine Drexel, along with her original tomb, will be translated to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia, and the public will be able to visit her remains when the tomb opens in September.
Retired Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick received the St. Katharine Drexel Award at a dinner in early November. SOAR!’s St. Katharine Drexel Award honors individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the Catholic Church, especially to America’s men and women religious.
As the sole heiress to her late father, Katharine inherited approximately $20 million, which would measure in excess of $200 million today. Katharine was one of the wealthiest people in the United States and could have done anything she wanted. She chose to go to the peripheries, and donated her entire inheritance to the care and help of those in poverty and need.
