Recently one of my employees found a service that matches people with projects with freelancers to do those projects. We work for a busy consulting company and often have discrete projects (research, data presentation, number crunching) that can easily be sourced to such freelancers, thereby accelerating our work and making things move more efficiently.

All good, or so I thought until I realized we are now making a habit of sending piecework to India. All of the freelancers are in India, and we are able to pay low prices to get the work done. Suddenly I feel like I’m operating a digital sweatshop.

I could a) stop using the service, b) pay higher rates voluntarily, or c) keep doing what I’ve been doing. Thoughts?

Sincerely,
Small Business Owner
